Hello everyone! I'm TK, a front-end engineer at Shippio

In this Shippio Tech Blog, I'd like to report on Bayside Tech Nite , a tech event hosted by Shippio, which was our engineering team's first attempt at such an event!

Bayside Tech Nite

What is it?

Bayside Tech Nite is a tech event hosted by Shippio, aiming to promote the international engineering community in Japan .

We hope to create an event where engineers from outside of Japan can expand their network, and Korean engineers interested in global engineering teams can participate without hesitation.

The event is conducted in English, but fluency is not required; we hope to provide a venue where people can challenge themselves to do a Lightning Talk in English.

The name “Bayside Tech Nite” was chosen to evoke associations with the ocean , which is inseparable from international logistics that Shippio handles, and the amazing view of Tokyo Bay (the attached photo is the nights from our office in Hamamatsucho.

Holding the Zeroth Event

With the desire for a small start and candid feedback, we held the first Bayside Tech Nite on 3/14, inviting friends and acquaintances of our engineering team members as a “zeroth event.”

It was held on a weekday, starting at 19:00, at our office, about a 5-minute walk from Hamamatsucho Station.

The event agenda included Lightning Talks in the first half, followed by a networking session in the second half:

19:00: Open
19:15: LT(7min) x4
20:00: Networking
21:00: Closing

Lightning Talk

For the zeroth event, we didn't have a specific theme for the LTs, but all of them were interesting and humorous presentations, with many questions flying around during the engaging Lightning Talks.

The joys of working in a Global environment: Ryan O'Connor from Shippio / CTO

The opening LT was a presentation by our CTO Ryan on the joys of working in a global environment. The phrase “stepping outside of the comfort zone” left a lasting impression on me, and it was a presentation that clearly conveyed the challenges and fun unique to a global setting.

How to win a Hackathon: Taiga Minami from Shippio / Front-End engineer

Taiga, who has a higher hackathon winning rate than Messi's dribbling success rate (!!), presented on how to win a hackathon.
The winning formula was truly eye-opening, and it was a must-listen for anyone interested in hackathons

Teams and Organizations: The Good Parts: Sunao Tanabe from SMS / Head of Engineering

Tanabe-san's presentation, packed with tips on how to create and be part of good teams and organizations, had me nodding my head so much that I thought it might fall off. Among his points, the phrase “social change starts with you ” struck a chord with me, and it was a motivating moment!

Mindset: Ramani Prathap from an online brokerage firm / Head of IT

Prathap-san's presentation on mindset, comparing “fixed mindset” and “growth mindset,” was very easy to understand and motivating as well. My takeaway from the LT is “Don't be afraid of failure”

During the second half of the event, we enjoyed light snacks like rice balls and, of course, while chatting! We talked about everything from our usual work to edible insects , and had a greattime with

Survey

We conducted a survey among participants later and received a lot of feedback. We're happy to share some of the feedback we received :

“I felt that this was a very good event because there are very few events where you can speak in English with foreign engineers.”

“The office was new, so the venue was excellent. The relaxed atmosphere was also nice.”

“The food at the networking event was delicious.”

“I think it's a rare and valuable event for Korean people, as it allows them to practice presenting in English and offers great networking opportunities.”

“I had a great time! I would love to join again next time!”

Based on the feedback received, we will continue to improve Bayside Tech Nite

Bayside Tech Nite: The First

Now, the date for the glorious first event has been decided: it will be held on May 19th (Fri)

The theme is “Ruby”
Shippio will participate as a platinum sponsor in RubyKaigi , which will be held from May 11th to 13th. We're planning to hold Bayside Tech Nite as an after-party for RubyKaigi, where with lingering excitement!

We haven't finalized the event details yet, and the event page is not yet created
As soon as the details are confirmed, we will update the information, so please follow the Connpass Shippio group and our Twitter below for more information!

We look forward to seeing you at future Bayside Tech Nite events

Bayside Tech Nite

19:00: Open
19:15: LT(7min) x4
20:00: Networking
21:00: Closing

Lightning Talk

The joys of working in a Global environment: Ryan O'Connor from Shippio / CTO

How to win a Hackathon: Taiga Minami from Shippio / Front-End engineer

(Speakerdeck)

Teams and Organizations: The Good Parts: Sunao Tanabe from SMS / Head of Engineering

Mindset: Ramani Prathap from an online brokerage firm / Head of IT

Bayside Tech Nite
