  • „Ich weiß, was du sagen wirst…“, bevor du etwas sagst.

  2. Please note that covert narcissists will treat you poorly AND THEN, when you react, they point to your reaction as the REASON for their behavior or as PROOF that you are somehow unstable or have anger issues or have a problem ! They will COMPLETELY disregard and IGNORE their instigating behavior!
  3. Delete your number from their phone. Of course they remember the number, but their hope is by deleting your number, they remove the temptation to call you and stop holding on to anything connected to you.
  4. Delete all emails they have to and from you.
  5. Completely discard any pictures of you that may exist on social media.
  6. If you were staying with them, they will discard all clothing & items they have of yours.
  7. They will discard sentimental cards and mementos from their relationship with you. If you were living in a place together and they leave, they will leave these items behind.
  8. If you were living together, they may leave EVERYTHING there and just go. They do not do this because they intend to come back and get their things. They do this because they don’t want any vestige of what existed between the two of you and they intend to start everything over and make their entire life over “BRAND NEW”. This particular item is interesting because they will often leave valuable things behind WITH NO INTENT OF RETRIEVING THE ITEMS. They just want to get away from you and they don’t care what they lose in the process. They are masters of reinvention and will create a new existence for themselves from the ground up, with no link to their past, if they can.
  9. Move to anywhere you aren’t. They will try to put as much distance between you and them as they possibly can!
  10. Limit their exposure to you in every possible way. This means they will likely block you on social media, unfollow your social media accounts, move and not tell you where they are moving to, etc. They are going to make SURE they put a stop to casual connections between you that could take place socially. This allows them to pretend the relationship didn’t happen and dull/blunt the pain of the breakup.
  11. Refuse to talk to you over the phone or only speak to you very briefly if you force the issue.
  12. Refuse to meet with you or, if you force the issue and they do agree to meet with you, they will let you know that they don’t want to be there and they will use their body language to demonstrate that they want to leave. For example, they may keep their jacket on, continue to stand after you are sitting, stand close to the door, pay attention to other things while you are talking, etc. They WILL let you know that they really do not want to see you and they are only there because YOU are forcing the issue!
  13. They will ask people who are close to them to not speak your name.
  14. They will pretend as if your relationship never existed.

They are going to go through all of this because, TO THEM, YOU were the abusive one! You may or may not have been, but they are EXTREMELY sensitive so they will perceive very small slights in an exaggerated way internally ! For example, if you ask them to cook something a certain way for you, they may not interpret that as a preference that is something you normally ask. They may interpret that as you attacking ALL of their cooking! Their minds often go to the EXTREME case of whatever you ask and they interpret it as an ATTACK when it isn’t! They are EXTREMELY sensitive.

Covert narcissists are the kings and queens of blame! Narcissists blame others in a general sense, but covert narcissists are very different. The extent of their blame runs deep and they, unlike some others, TRULY BELIEVE YOU ARE THE ISSUE! They deflect and convince themselves of this through their own false narratives and the internal discussions they have! If you repeat something often enough to yourself, you often actually start to believe it and they do! They are extraordinary drama kings and queens and are extraordinarily negative. They have EXTREMELY FRAGILE EGOS and get mad at the SLIGHTEST REAL OR PERCEIVED threat! They internalize and personalize almost EVERYTHING - even when things are not personal or something they should internalize! They hold grudges - FOR AN EXTRAORDINARILY LONG TIME! To them, if you did something at one point, you will NEVER escape from the negativity associated with that in their mind! When they decide who someone is, they take away the opportunity for them to be anything else in their minds. This means that they are continually holding on to A LOT of baggage AND A LOT OF ANGER AND HURT! THIS is one of the core reasons why they can be so miserable with their partners!

Let me add something VERY important right here! If you are with a covert narcissist AND YOU HAVE AN AFFAIR, which is a very bad thing, AND they TRY to forgive you, 9 times out of 10 the relationship is doomed and you should move on! Covert narcissists will TRY their level best to forgive, BUT they will relive the incident over and over in their minds. They will TRY to put it out of their minds, but TRUTHFULLY it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for them because of how their minds work! They will end up TRYING to suppress their anger toward you, but they often will NOT be able to. Instead, they will start to withdraw from you, mistreat you and then leave. If you have crossed that line and hurt them in that way, it is truly best for you to move on because they are not going to be able to get past it AND be “content” or “happy” with you again. I’m not even saying that they SHOULD be happy if you cheat on them, but some people can forgive cheating and move past it. Covert narcissists cannot. The betrayal of trust runs too deep for them and, even if they try, they will typically not be successful at forgiving you because of how their minds work. If you cheat and they catch you, you may as well move on and take that loss. The relationship will never be the same and never be better!

Covert narcissists will also say something and then DENY that they said it! This creates an off-balance feeling in the victim experiencing this and often makes the victim question his or her own sanity. The ONLY “solution” I have ever seen that works for this is recording all conversations with them! However, even in situations where the conversations were recorded, sometimes a covert narcissist will actually REFUSE to listen to the recorded conversation! They may not listen, but at least you have the proof for yourself. Notice that I put solution in quotes. That is because recording your partner all the time is not truly a solution to anything . It just provides you with the “proof” that you are not crazy. Recording someone all the time is tiresome, burdensome and troublesome! Who wants to live like that? Leaving is the TRUE solution.

When they finally DO explode or decide to leave, many people are left absolutely shell-shocked because the “final straw” for a covert narcissist is typically something VERY small. This is because the covert narcissist has worked themselves up over time because of the grudges they have held. They do NOT TRULY forgive. Instead, they file things away and move past it temporarily. In essence, they stop talking about it, but they do NOT forget it. For example, let’s say that you hurt their feelings in Year 1. In Year 2, you said something else that they found offensive. In Year 6, you say something else. In Year 7, you have an argument about something completely unrelated and the narcissist breaks up with you because they said you don’t “respect” them. The argument, which had nothing to do with “respect”, wasn’t about ANYTHING connected to what happened in Year 1, 2 or 6, but because the covert narcissist has held on to the NEGATIVE EMOTIONS they felt about those events, they are STILL MAD and will bring up the events of Year 1, 2 & 6 like it happened yesterday! YOU are sitting there wondering why they are so angry about this little thing you are arguing about in Year 7 and why they are breaking up over something so stupid! You likely never realized they were even thinking about what happened in Year 1, 2 or 6 because they never communicated their anger and TALKED IT THROUGH like other people. Again, covert narcissists are EXTREME grudge holders and they have an inability to TRULY forgive and let things go permanently. Instead, they may SAY they forgive, stop talking about something and then file it away. You will think they are letting something go, but they are NOT! Things build up inside of them. I liken covert narcissists to volcanoes. They are always one explosion away from running and when that explosion happens, it is extraordinary!

When a covert narcissist has decided they are leaving because of everything YOU did wrong, they have typically gone over the reasons why their leaving is necessary for A VERY long time! They have thought about it and thought about it and have come to the idea that you are not going to “change”. Therefore, they feel ABSOLUTELY justified in blaming you for everything under the sun, getting away from you and discarding you! They will have had these internal conversations so much that they actually BELIEVE they talked to YOU about it when they have not! They may even say that they said things connected to what has been eating away at them when they have not because the INTERNAL conversations they have had have been going on for so long!

Covert narcissists can stay in relationships for long periods of time! A relationship with them is usually miserable when it starts stretching out because they are always angry and upset about SOMETHING! As I stated, it may be year 5 and the covert narcissist may STILL be secretly upset about something that happened in year 1! You will likely not even realize that they are angry or still holding a grudge! In one case of covert narcissism, the partner said something to the covert narcissist’s boss that the covert narcissist did not like less than a year into their relationship. Oddly enough, the partner found out from the covert narcissist IN YEAR 12 OF THE RELATIONSHIP that the covert narcissist was STILL mad about that! The partner had NO IDEA they had even offended the covert narcissist! THAT is how they hold on to things AND don’t communicate that they are upset about something! I would like to add something that is VERY important. One of the KEY reasons that covert narcissists become so angry is because they have not adequately COMMUNICATED their issues to their partners. Instead, they get mad about something and go over it in their heads. Sometimes they say ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the issue they have! If they do say something, it is often in passing or after you have called out some behavior you are unhappy with. They don’t typically initiate conversations about whatever they are angry about. Instead, they go over what they believe you have done and have a “mock conversation” about it in their heads. They may think they know how you will respond and they sometimes create scenarios about your alleged “response” in their heads. The other side is if they EVER DO express their displeasure with something and you don’t correct it FOREVER they feel that they came to you and you ignored them, which leads to an entirely different response because they feel they said something and you “ignored” them.

When you hold on to things for years, don’t communicate your negative feelings about whatever it is, don’t forgive and passive aggressively make your partner “pay” for what you think they did to you, it is no wonder that the covert narcissist has mentally come to a point where they feel they want to get away from you! They were mad about things they were going over and over in their head and, often, the partners had NO IDEA how mad they really were! This is also one reason why intimacy with a covert narcissist may end LONG before the relationship ends! It is NOT rare to go MANY YEARS without having sex with a covert narcissist! It WON’T be because they are cheating either! A covert narcissist may not be cheating, but they STILL can reach points where they go for VERY long periods of time without being intimate with their partners! The covert narcissist typically will develop intimacy issues as he or she internalizes more and more and communicates less and less. Covert narcissists will tell you that the reason they can’t communicate is YOUR fault! They will say that you don’t let them express themselves, which of course is completely untrue! To the covert narcissist, however, it is their perception and it is REAL AND TRUE to them! They have a very DISTINCT problem with how they communicate in relationships! They think they “know” what you are going to say or do and, because of this, they don’t feel comfortable expressing their vulnerabilities. They can be very nice when they are not upset, but they can become VERY emotionally unavailable people in a relationship. One of the key takeaways from dealing with a covert narcissistic personality is this:

  • Covert narcissists typically have a VERY hard time expressing vulnerability! They have a hard time confronting someone and admitting that something that happened actually HURT them! They are EXTREMELY protective of their hearts and souls and they feel VERY aggrieved that their partners don’t “GET” them or “TRULY KNOW” them in the way they feel they should! If you dig into their backgrounds, in almost every case I have seen, you find parents who were struggling emotionally with other issues and were not front and center for them emotionally. Sometimes the parents had a bad marriage or relationship. Sometimes the parents were working too much & the kid was left alone. Sometimes the parents were just neglectful. In a lot of cases, they were the middle child and their parents were distracted with real life. Either way, there were situations in their childhoods that resulted in situations where their parents didn’t have a high level of emotional availability for them and that left them realizing, consciously or subconsciously, that they had to take care of and protect themselves from being vulnerable. That emotional unavailability set them on a path to feeling that they are the only ones they can count on to protect themselves and that idea carried forward, of course, into their adult lives. They learned early on how to suppress their feelings and navigate in life, but sometimes they can’t suppress their feelings enough and something can happen that tips the scale causing their anger to come tumbling out. Their pain is very real to them and the emotional turmoil their lack of communication causes is real to the people they are involved with.

So, to answer your question, covert narcissists ABSOLUTELY CAN & DO discard people without hoovering, unlike the more typical narcissistic types people encounter. Many people think that all narcissists are the same and that they engage with people in the same manner, but they absolutely DO NOT! People often base their feelings about narcissists on their own experience. However, unless you see a variety of narcissists and a variety of situations, those people may not realize that there are “varieties” of narcissistic types. In fact, if you are looking on Quora, you will find many instances of people who have encountered people they believe to be narcissists who have NOT hoovered or attempted to contact them at all. Sometimes this is because the person they were dealing with was not a narcissist, but sometimes it is because narcissism occurs on a spectrum, there are multiple “varieties” or “types” of narcissist and their behaviors, although typically similar, can at times deviate. Some are more inclined to do certain things than others and covert narcissists are very different among most narcissists in that they absolutely can and do discard people. IN FACT, if you leave a covert narcissist alone AFTER they discard you, they typically will not try to come back! So if YOU can control YOUR emotions and leave them alone, you will often end up free from the covert narcissist types.

No they don’t discard any source of supplies permanently.

The relationship with them ends when they victim head enough of the abuse and leaves them in most case scenarios, the victim gets aware of their fake persona calls them on their lies and manipulations, asks the relationship to be a two way street and asks for their empathy, they of course on the other hand will try to give you as little effort as possible to keep you on queue by neutralizing your attempts to leave manipulating with:Gaslighting(Refusing everything that they did, making you doubt your own sanity)Emotional withhold(Withholding everything that feel’t good or they gave you as a punishment because you called them on their actions how dare you,for further more control)Projection(Basically projecting their actions to you, telling you are overthinking, you are going insane,it’s on you not them, while they continue with lies and manipulations)Stone Walls(Basically when the victim tries to make sense what happened,or how the switch happened so fast,or require answers from the NPD,they will Stone Wall giving 0 answers,so the victim can beg, cling, cry whatever in agony while they feed on both positive and negative fuel enjoying it to the max)And the last and more painful technique would be Silent Treatmens(Every time you try to stand on your ground or call them on their actions, they will prolong the silent treatments basically ghosting you while you are left alone wondering on agonizing pain, what the hell is going on,with this they are giving you a passive-aggressive message of’’My shitty object,if you dare to rebel or call me on my lies and manipulations,i will give you my silence and withhold everything that i gave you,so you will be left alone on agonizing pain, because you don’t deserve my words i will just give you my silence, because i never loved you, cared about you,or connected to you,Since i can’t feel Empathy neither do i possess the ability to form a healthy connection with anyone).
