Ethan Hawke co-starred with Sarah Snook in the 2014 time-travel film Predestination. It was a feature-length movie she was hoping to leave an impression on.

“I was like, right, put in as much effort as you can, because this doesn’t happen a lot, Sarah,” Snook told herself according to News AU. “Really relish it. I have to keep myself in check in terms of the luxury of that so early in my career. Maybe I’ll still be doing films in 20 years, but I can’t imagine myself doing this kind of role again.”

In Predestination, Sarah Snook plays a woman who goes through gender reassignment surgery to become a man. Apart from gaining recognition for putting on a noteworthy performance in both roles, Snook also gained notoriety for her striking resemblance to Leonardo DiCaprio.

“And here it is, in the middle of this crazy-ass genre film, this young woman giving this incredible performance. There are critics who think it’s two actors. They’ve said: ‘Who’s the young DiCaprio lookalike?’” The Purge actor once revealed to The Guardian.

Word of Snook’s likeness to DiCaprio eventually reached Snook herself.

“So many people have said that,” Snook recalled. “I didn’t see it. People on set were like, ‘Woah!’ I was like, ‘Oh, someone said it now you’ve all picked it up.”

Still, Snook took the comparison in jest.

“But now it’s been an unusual amount of random people who have commented, so maybe that will be my niche … maybe I will play a man again and it will be the younger Leonardo DiCaprio,” she quipped. “I kind of hope not. If I could maybe just play a film with him, but not as him. That might be good.”

How Sarah Snook learned to play both a man and a woman in ‘Predestination’

A lot of thought and research went into playing a woman and a man for Snook. It was more than just switching clothes. It took truly understanding the psychological and physiological differences between the two genders. One of the things that helped her understand those differences was the insight from a friend.

“I was speaking to a friend who made a female-to-male transition recently, about the physiological change when she started taking testosterone supplements,” Snook recalled. “She said: ‘I now understand what people mean when they say they’re so angry they could kill someone because that’s exactly what I suddenly felt.’ It’s chemical. It’s fascinating.”
