The Porsche 924 became a more interesting performer with the release of a Turbo model for the 1980 model year. It bowed with 143 horsepower, and quelled some of the criticism that hounded the non-turbo model. The Porsche 924 Turbo was sold through the 1982 model year.

The Porsche 944 bowed in 1982, answering criticisms that the Audi-built 924 wasn't a "real Porsche." The 944 was available in several different models, including the 944 S, 944 S2, and 944 S2 Cabriolet. The Porsche 944 enjoyed a nine-year run that ended in 1991.

The Porsche 944 improved on the 924 with more power and bolder styling.

The Porsche 944 debuted for 1983 as a 2+2 coupe; a convertible bowed for 1989.

Porsche upped the performance ante of its entry-level line in a big way by adding a 944 Turbo in 1986. Like that year's regular 944s, it arrived with a more coherent and attractive dashboard, but stood apart with unique nose styling and wider tires on 928-style "telephone dial" alloy wheels. The 944 Turbo was sold from 1986 to 1989.

The updated dashboard of the Porsche 944 Turbo was sporty and driver-friendly.

A single turbocharger boosted the Porsche 944 Turbo's engine to 217 horsepower.

The Porsche 944 Turbo gained 30 horsepower for 1988, for a healthy 247.
