The Shedd's exhibits bring you close to exotic underwater worlds. The 400,000-gallon Wild Reef habitat has one of North America's most diverse displays of sharks. Its floor-to-ceiling aquarium windows give guests a diver's-eye view of a Philippine coral reef teeming with more than 500 species of reef fishes of all shapes, colors, and sizes.

The Caribbean Coral Reef tank is filled with just about every species you'd expect to find in tropical waters. A variety of rainbow-colored fish share the space with several sharks and sea turtles. Divers hand-feed the animals at scheduled times during the day. At Amazon Rising, anacondas, piranhas, and spiders the size of dinner platters bring the diverse Amazon basin to life.

The expansive Oceanarium exhibit re-creates a Pacific Northwest marine environment, with dolphins, harbor seals, sea otters, penguins, and beluga whales visible through underwater viewing windows. During scheduled shows each day in the Oceanarium, visitors will be entertained by the exciting acrobatics of the Shedd's dolphins.

North America's largest and longest-running festival of films for children, the Chicago International Children's Film Festival brings together some of the best animated and live action films from 40 different countries. The festival traditionally begins in October and spans an 11-day period. There is something to appeal to children of all ages, with special programs directed at four different age groups ranging between 2 and 13.

The films and videos -- dramas, documentaries, comedies, social commentaries, artistic vignettes, and animated shorts -- compete for recognition and prizes, and children who attend the festival vote for their favorites. One of the categories is Child-Produced Work, which features the works of aspiring filmmakers under the age of 18.

In past festivals, films such as The Raspberry Worm from Finland, The Little Monsterette from Switzerland, Domo-Kun and the Egg from Japan, and Runaway Bathtub from the United States have been presented. The films shown at the festival are carefully selected to present humanistic, nonexploitative, culturally diverse, and nonviolent work. The festival also sponsors a number of workshops for kids interested in making movies.

During the holiday season, it's hard for a meerkat to get a good night's sleep when millions of tiny lights brighten the grounds of the Lincoln Park Zoo and add a festive glow. You'll see the animals with thick winter coats lolling about in the cool night air, while their less-insulated brethren remain indoors in heated enclosures.

You can take in the sights on foot or jump aboard the Holiday Express train to view the more than 100 light displays and giant illuminated animal figures located throughout the zoo. Other highlights include ice-carving demonstrations and family crafts and activities in the Kovler Lion House. Children can pay a visit to Santa in his workshop, listen to stories and music, and ride the zoo's carousel. Carolers offer entertainment during the evening, and when little zoo-goers get hungry, there are plenty of hot treats.

What was once an eyesore of decaying railroad tracks and parking lots along Chicago's lakefront is now a stunning 24.5-acre urban jewel called Millennium Park. Among its major attractions are two extraordinary pieces of public art that have captivated visitors. One is a highly reflective 110-ton polished steel sculpture officially named Cloud Gate but affectionately called "The Bean." Visitors can wander under and around it to see the park and cityscape reflected in its curves.

The other, the Crown Fountain, is a reflecting pool flanked by two 50-foot towers onto which close-up images of Chicagoans are projected. The lips on the faces purse, and water sprays from them, making the ever-changing faces look like giant gargoyles. On warm days, children splash in the shallow water between the two towers and delight in the spray from the fountains.

There are plenty of lawns for picnicking, walkways among hedges and gardens, a performing arts venue, and a bicycle rental center so visitors can tour the park on wheels. A large outdoor ice-skating rink is open throughout the winter months.

Chicago's lakefront playground is a fabulous 50-acre complex of parks, promenades, shops, and restaurants. Much of it is quite literally a pier overhanging the blue waters of Lake Michigan. Navy Pier is a wonderful place to bike or roller blade, and rental shops offer both.

The pier is home to a wide array of family-oriented events and entertainment. Its most visible attraction is a 150-foot-high Ferris wheel that was modeled after the one built for Chicago's 1893 World Columbian Exposition. It is a great way to get a bird's-eye view of the area. Other attractions include a musical carousel, old-fashioned Viennese swings, miniature golf, a maze, an IMAX theater, and an excellent children's museum.

Chicago's Magnificent Mile stretches along North Michigan Avenue between Oak Street and the Chicago River. The 100-story John Hancock Center may be the most prominent building on this stretch, but don't overlook the other architectural gems. The Tribune Tower, with its decorative buttresses and gothic design, was once called "the most beautiful and eye-catching building in the world."

During the 20th century's "Great Migration" of blacks from the American South, many Mississippi Delta blues musicians moved north to the frigid Windy City and found themselves playing in smoky, noisy nightclubs. In the 1930s, blues musicians added electric guitars, electric bass, and drums, and their sound cut through any nightclub's din. By the 1940s, Chi-town blues icons such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had created what is now called the Chicago Blues.

One way to sample the Windy City grooves is the Chicago Blues Festival, which features a half-dozen stages and scores of blues acts. The festival takes over Grant Park for four days each June. Or you might prefer to sample the music at the dozens of clubs south of downtown and on the city's south side. Well-known clubs such as Buddy Guy's Legends, Lee's Unleaded Blues, Kingston Mines, Frankie's, House of Blues, Checkerboard Lounge, and Rosa's Lounge can be touristy but fun. Don't miss the smaller clubs dotting the Windy City, too -- they yield rich musical rewards.
