Country size comparison:

Let’s see how small Suriname looks like on a Mercator Map.

Suriname looks much smaller than the UK , Scandinavia, The Balkans and Greece. It could easily fit inside the southern tip of Greenland .

This is how large Suriname is when placed on the northern part of Greenland.

When placed on the UK, it looks much larger than Wales .

It’s width is the same distance form Oslo to Stockholm .

It engulfs Denmark and part of Sweden.

In comparison to France

Lets try other South American countries,

Ecuador may look very tiny on the Mercator Map, but in reality it is larger than Portugal , England , Wales, Scotland and Ireland (separately). Look how far the Galapagos is!

On the Mercator, the UK looks taller than Colombia , but in reality, Colombia completely conceals the UK and reaches as high as Iceland .

Colombia covers Central Europe!

Now, the UK in comparison to South America.

The height of the UK is the same distance from Buenos Aires and Asunción . The UK and Uruguay have the same width.

The width of the UK is the same distance from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. The height of the UK is the same distance from Brasilia to Rio and São Paulo.

The UK compared to South America!

Now the UK compared to Antartica :

More massive and remember, the height of the UK is the same distance form Buenos Aires to Asunción.

Chile compared to Europe, Chile with the reputation of being really slim, is thicker than the UK :

Russia compared to South America:

Now how big is Central America?

If the Mercator Map was how the Earth really was:

In reality:

Now let’s look at distances:

What’s to closest American state to Africa?

Many would say Florida, but in reality Maine is the closest state to Africa, many the U.S.A , Mexico and The Caribbean are the closest countries in North America to Africa, but in reality it’s Canada :

Some more (this is how distorted the Mercator Map is):

Mexico is much much culturally closer to the Philippines than the UK , but distance wise, the UK is much closer:

Buenos Aires is the same distance from London than Seattle (London is slightly closer though):

Miami is closer to Guatemala City and Barranquilla than to New York- no wonder it’s called the capital of Latin America:

Miami is closer to Nassau than to other cities in Florida such as Orlando and Tampa:

You think Miami is very international?

Key West is closer to Havana than it is to Miami:

Ok, that’s enough of Florida,

Anything in the white circle ⚪️ is closer to Vancouver than Ottawa is, this includes California, Northern Mexico , Mexico City and Chicago:

Now a bigger circle ⭕️, anything which fits in this next closer is closer to Vancouver than New Foundland is:

In fact, Vancouver and New Foundland (despite part of the same country) are so far apart that New Foundland is closer to a bunch of European cities and some South American and African cities than it is to Vancouver:

Now, Heights:

Is Mount Everest the tallest?

Mauna Kea is taller at 10210 metres (Mount Everest at 8848 metres), but most of Mauna Kea is under water with only 4207 metres reaching above the surface.

It’s your choice whether you want to consider Mauna Kea as the tallest mountain or not.
